Thinking about learning to sail? Rudyard Lake Sailing Club is an RYA Recognised Training Centre, running both RYA approved courses and junior training sessions throughout the season for all ages and ability levels.
Learn to Sail – Juniors (Under 18)
Most children learn to sail through our fun Saturday sessions through the season, called Jybaz. These comprise activities and coaching in groups according to age and ability.
We have established pathways for our juniors in to racing and into development as instructors.
Please visit the Jybaz section for more details.
Older youth members are also welcome to join our formal adult training courses.
The club offers taster sessions and regular sail training sessions for school groups either as part of their PE curriculum or as after-school activities.
Research has shown that children develop other skills such as teamwork, communication and creativity while learning to sail, they also feel more confident and are better able to do things independently.
If you are interested in finding out more about this contact the Training team.
Learn to Sail - Adults
We are continuing with adult training sessions but there are limitations on the activities and facilities which are set out here: Policy 018 - Sailing post COVID-19.
We run training courses through the season for all ages and abilities. You are welcome to visit the club for advice or further information. People with disabilities are welcomed. The best day to visit is a Sunday, from early March onwards, or come down for our Open Day on the first Monday in May (May Bank Holiday). Please also see the Social Sailing section for other events you may like to come to.
Courses are offered to members, but every new adult sailing member is offered a free RYA sailing course worth £112 as part of the membership. The club offers:
- RYA Level 1 Start Sailing
- RYA Level 2 Basic Skills
- RYA Level 3 Better Sailing
If you are someone who has sailed before and you now want to get back on the water, why not join as a new member and have a free 1:1 coaching session to help you get back sailing.
Further dinghy courses may be purchased. Each of these courses lasts two days and includes lunch, all course materials and certificates. The courses are normally on two successive Saturdays starting at 9 am and finishing about 5 pm. We will provide buoyancy aids and there is advice here on What to Wear. The maximum number of students per instructor is six.
The Club also offers to members RYA Powerboat level 1 and 2, Safety Boat and the RYA First Aid Course. A new adult member may opt for a Powerboat level 1 course in place of a dinghy sailing course.
All members may use the Club facilities, are covered by the club insurance whilst training and can sail any available club boat for the sum of £5 per person, per session (half day).
